TYPES OF MANIPULATIVE MEDIA

  • These manipulative media consists of all the physical objects

  • Examples includes: rods, blocks, beads, beans, paper cups

  • Cuisenaire Rods: explore scientific and mathematical concepts (numbers and shape)

  • Pattern Blocks: create mosaic-like patterns (geometric concepts)

Traditional Manipulative Media

  • The new manipulative material

  • computational capabilities inside traditional children’s toys—such as blocks, beads, and balls

  • learn new concepts with a "kindergarten approach" as they progress through school

  • enable physical objects to move, sense, and interact with one another -- and, as a result, make systems-related concepts more salient to (can be manipulated by) children.

  • Examples:

    • LEGO/logo

    • Blocks => programmable bricks (input programs into each bricks)

    • Beads => programmable beads (creating patterns of lights in strings of beads)

    • Ball => Bitball (transparent ball with LED, cricket and accelerometer)

    • Badges => Thinking Tags (communication among people using the badges)
